Walal Coffee

Who WE ARE

Our primary farm is located in Kellem Wollega, Anfilloo Woreda, within the Garjeeda Forest Reserve a landscape deeply rooted in the origin of Arabica coffee. Surrounded by highland forests and rich biodiversity, this environment provides ideal conditions for cultivating high-quality coffee while preserving its natural ecosystem.

In addition to our established farm, we have recently expanded with a new 10-hectare site, further strengthening our commitment to quality production and sustainable growth.

Beyond our own farms, Walal Coffee works closely with local communities through an outgrowers scheme, bringing together smallholder farmers under one umbrella. By sourcing coffee directly from farmers, we ensure better traceability, consistent quality, and stronger, more transparent relationships that support long-term livelihoods.

Walal Coffee was created to connect this rich heritage and local expertise with the global specialty coffee market sharing coffees that are not only exceptional in quality, but also meaningful in origin.

Origin & Heritage

The Birthplace of Arabica

Western Ethiopia is the ancestral home of wild Arabica coffee. For generations, communities in regions like Jimma and Kaffa have cultivated deep cultural ties to these vast forest ecosystems. The area's diverse altitudes and soils produce unique, complex flavor profiles found nowhere else.

Evolution of Cultivation

Coffee farming has evolved over centuries, rooted in oral history. Legends tell of pioneers like Godii, who discovered wild trees in the Waabaa forest and began domesticating them. This knowledge was passed down through descendants, gradually spreading seeds and techniques to neighboring settlements.

Expansion and Growth

As global demand rose in the late 19th century, farmers established new plots along emerging trade routes. Cultivation climbed higher into the mountains, eventually reaching altitudes of 2,400 meters. This migration integrated coffee farming deeper into the natural landscape.

Sustainability and the Future

Today, Ethiopian coffee is
argely grown using traditional agroforestry, where forest canopies protect the plants and preserve biodiversity. The focus has shifted toward sustainability balancing forest protection with quality focused markets to ensure long term stability for both the environment
and local farmers.
